Who needs to audition?
All students in the Jacobs School of Music participate in an ensemble each semester of enrollment, unless they are enrolled in a doctoral degree or have completed four semesters of X070 ensembles in their Masters. Your degree program dictates your area of ensemble participation. Undergraduate and graduate students who are not majoring in an orchestral or band instrument are required to audition for choral ensemble placement. Also, any non-music major who wishes to sing in a Jacobs School of Music Ensemble must audition.
How do I sign up for an audition?
Sign up for your audition in MA051 beginning August 1st. Voice majors and non-voice majors will audition for a small group of the choral conducting faculty and conducting majors. When signing up for an audition you will be given an Ensemble Audition Form to bring completed to your audition.
Auditions last approximately 7 minutes.
Voice majors should prepare an art song in any style or language - No opera arias, please. An accompanist will be provided, so bring your sheet music.
Non voice-majors typically do not have vocal music in their repertoire, so feel free to bring any popular melody, folk song or hymn with you.
All students will sight-read a melodic and a rhythmic excerpt.
What happens after your audition?
If callbacks are required they will take place on Monday, August 27. Ensemble assignments will be posted on Tuesday, August 28 and most ensembles will begin rehearsing that afternoon. Please note that the "Morning" Ensembles will begin the week of September 4.
Can't find your name on a choral roster or instruction notice?
Don't worry. We frequently wait to post final rosters until the call-backs are completed. Once final rosters are posted, they will include information on when and where to pick up music in time for your first rehearsal.
Please sign up for your audition as soon as possible as there are many students who must be heard the first week of classes. This year, opera auditions will take place during the same week as choral auditions, so plan accordingly.
