Mike Flynn, AS 1996
Mike Flynn is a Grammy nominated producer/songwriter and senior vice president of A&R and staff producer for the Capitol Music Group. He has worked with many successful artists such as The Fray, Sara Bareilles, Howie Day, Shakira, Incubus, Sean Kingston, The Script and more. He produced both of The Frays albums selling over 4 million records and 15 million singles. Prior to his appintment to Capitol, he was senior A&R executive at Epic Records. “At IU, I was able to acquire a hands on foundation and understanding of music production”. Mike credits a large part of his success from the valuable knowledge and practice he obtained while studying in the Department of Audio Engineering and Sound Production.
Julie Randolph, AS 1996
Julie Randolph has been the production engineer for Jersey Boys Broadway since its inception in La Jolla, CA in 2004 and currently mixes five shows a week. As production engineer under sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy, she helped open Jersey Boys productions in Chicago, Las Vegas, and London, as well as two national tours. She served as mixer opening the revivals of Guys & Dolls in 2008 and Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011 on Broadway. Prior to coming to New York, she toured for over five years with various musical theater productions including the First National Tours of Hairspray and Elton John & Tim Rice’s Aida. She is a member of IATSE. “The huge advantage of the audio program at IU is that it is based in the School of Music. Students get a solid foundation in physics, electronics, and music– and strangely, this is all lacking in the majority of theater department-based audio programs. The skills I learned at IU prepared me to start in all types of live sound right away: rock and roll, corporate, systems tech, and theater.”

Katia Lewin, BSOF 2004
Katia Lewin is an independent music editor for film based in Los Angeles. She has worked on films such as The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn parts 1 & 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Sherlock Holmes; television shows such as The Pacific; and video games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. From 2008 to 2010 Katia worked as engineer for Hans Zimmer at his studio, Remote Control productions. Katia writes: “Having double majored in music performance and audio engineering, I found myself well positioned to build a career in the film industry. IU’s rigorous curriculum of audio fundamentals and electronics, combined with the daily hands-on production work I did in audio crew put me a step ahead of my peers as I was trying to break into the industry. Tony Elfers, BS 2006
Upon completion of his degree Tony moved to Chicago to pursue a career in commercial music production. Now a staff composer at Sonixphere, he has composed music for many national television commercials and a variety of television shows. His credits include original music for Marathon, McDonalds, Boeing, Bob Evans, and many others; as well as numerous reality television shows. He is also a two-time BMI award winner for the Discovery Channel series Flying Wild Alaska. Tony says "My education at IU played a critical role in getting me where I am today. At IU I benefited not just from the strong foundation in recording and mixing that all students of the Audio Engineering program enjoy, I was also able to study music theory, composition, and orchestration with world class faculty. This was invaluable for my development as a composer. In addition, as part of the audio production crew I learned how to work well with others and the value of taking on and completing difficult tasks; these were life lessons that I put to use almost daily."
Andrew Hey, BS 2006
Andrew is head engineer and music producer for Harvey Mason Media. He has engineered and produced songs for artists such as Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Chris Brown, and Britney Spears. "At IU, I learned the fundamentals of audio engineering, skills that I use every day in my career. But I didn't just learn this in the classroom, every day I had the opportunity to practice and refine my engineering skills on real recording projects. It makes a big difference. As I think back to my time at Indiana I am struck by the diversity of material I got to to record; everything from symphony orchestras, to big band jazz, to garage rock bands. Jeff Steeg, BS 2007
Jeff Steeg is the lead audio engineer at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel Indiana. Equipped with world-class facilities, the Center regularly hosts some of the most gifted performers in the world. Prior to joinin the staff of the Center, Jeff was the lead studio engineer at Sweetwater Studios.
"The Audio Engineering program not only gave me a strong foundation in audio engineering, but also instilled the confidence I needed to have a successful career. The hands-on experience taught me the importance of more than just the gear, I learned how an engineer must interact with the artist to get their best performance. Being able to work quickly and efficiently, and the ability to adapt to any situation are crucial skills in my daily work at the Center for the Performing Arts; the roots of my success come from my time at Indiana."
Stephen Schappler, BS 2007
Stephen is a sound designer at NetherRealm Studios (WB Games) in Chicago, where he records, designs, and mixes sounds for video games. Previously, he was a recording engineer at Dubway Studios in New York City, where he worked on Emmy award winning animated shows for Nickelodeon and a wide variety of other projects. “IU gave me the foundation and knowledge to succeed as a recording engineer and sound designer. My engineering and production style is heavily anchored by a deep understanding of music, sound, and electronics. In addition to the classroom knowledge and instruction, IU provided unparalleled access to world class musicians, audio facilities, and hands on recording experiences that were crucial to my development as a musician and audio engineer. Drew Vandenberg, BS 2008
Drew is a staff engineer and the studio manager at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA. Drew has worked on records for the Drive-By Truckers, Deerhunter, Cracker, and the Grammy Award winning 'Potato Hole' by Stax legend Booker T Jones. He has mixed a Grammy Award nominated record for comedian Patton Oswalt as well as releases by comedian Brian Posehn, Widespread Panic, and The Modern Skirts. His diverse production/engineering work in the Athens music scene also includes Futurebirds, The Whigs, Kuroma, Thayer Sarrano, Tendaberry, Hope For Agoldensummer, The Interns, and many others. "The Audio Engineering Program helped me develop a diverse skill set that allows me to keep up with my fast-paced job. The ability to troubleshoot and repair technical problems as well as my comfort recording in a wide variety of environments and situations are invaluable skills that I learned at IU. The 'structured freedom' of the curriculum is what helped me the most. They teach you the fundamentals and then say: 'Here's an eighty piece orchestra, how do you want to mic it?' Or 'there's the mic locker, find a band and figure out how to make it sound good'. The hands-on experience and the opportunity to record such a wide variety of music is priceless."
