Blair Johnston earned his Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Michigan, where he taught courses in tonal analysis, atonal analysis, figured bass, and musicianship. His dissertation, "Harmony and Climax in the Late Works of Sergei Rachmaninoff," examines chromatic structures and expressive shapes in works from the composer's late Russian and exile periods, and develops an interpretive model applicable to a broad range of Postromantic repertory. Portions of this research were presented at the 2007 annual meeting of the Society for Music Theory. Also a violinist, he studied chamber and orchestral music at Tanglewood, serving as concertmaster during the Festival of Contemporary Music. Dr. Johnston's research interests include the intersection of tonal and non-tonal procedures in music from the first half of the twentieth century and Postromantic form.
