Musicology Requirements

Master of Arts in Musicology (M.A.)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

To apply for the M.A. or Ph.D. you need to submit two applications: one to the University Graduate School and one to the Jacobs School of Music.

In addition to the materials required on the music application, you should submit GRE General test scores and a formal research paper or thesis on an analytical or historical subject. Non-native speakers also must submit a TOEFL score of at least 84 for admission to the MA program and 100 for admission to the PhD program.

All application materials must be submitted by the December 1st deadline.

After a review of your application materials, the department will determine whether you will be invited for an interview.

The Musicology Department offers direct entry to the Ph.D. program for highly qualified students who have completed B.A. or B.M. degrees.

Master of Arts in Musicology and Master of Library Science from the Department of Information and Library Science in the School of Informatics and Computing (M.A./ M.L.S.)

Admission to the two programs is separate. To apply to the dual-degree program, you need to submit three applications: two applications to the University Graduate School (one for the M.A. in Musicology and one for the M.L.S.): and one to the Jacobs School of Music (for the M.A. in Musicology).
