Music Theory

Students earning a graduate degree in music theory at IU can draw on the resources of a major university as well as the academic and performance offerings of a top music school. Graduates of the Department of Music Theory at IU hold key positions in colleges and universities around the nation.

The Department of Music Theory offers both master's and doctoral programs in music theory, as well as the combined master's of music theory and library science degree. Students in the programs develop a critical understanding of current approaches to analysis and interpretation and the history and pedagogy of music theory, and they explore a wide range of specialized topics through seminars featuring the research expertise of the faculty. Students also take courses in music history and literature, and choose an additional cognate or minor in another field from within music or from a wide range of outstanding academic programs throughout IU.

In addition, the department sponsors a biweekly colloquium series of research presentations and seminars by guest lecturers, faculty, and students. The Graduate Theory Association, a student professional organization, sponsors a biennial research conference and publishes the journal, Indiana Theory Review. There are also many opportunities for students to pursue performance experiences.
